I unfortunately misplaced my very old yet incredibly durable Google Pixel earbuds in Berlin, and I’ve refused to replace them (yet) because I think the cost is a little bit outrageous.
This morning, I woke up early to go on a run, and normally, that would be my cue to put on a podcast or some music. But what was I supposed to do with no earbuds?
So, for the first time in forever, I went on a run with nothing plugged into my ears. I decided to run by the lake I’ve always wanted to walk by, and at some point, I stopped in my tracks to take in the view and listen to the birds.
For the first time in forever, I could hear my own breath change as I ran harder. I could hear my keys jangling in my waist belt. I could hear the crunch of my soles hitting the ground and the scooters before they even came into view. I could feel the wind and hear the ducks, or fish, or whatever was in the water, making this little “gbdum” sound, almost like that Netflix intro sound.
I felt things that would typically be lost to me, or at least harder to notice, because of the sound in my ears. And as I sit here writing this, I wonder why I never tried to “rawdog” my runs until now.
Again, it makes me realize (yet again) that this isn't the first time I have bemoaned that the technology meant to bring the world to our fingertips has somehow taken us further away from the world itself.

Today, I got a reminder from Google Photos to look back at this time last year. So I did... then I noticed a pattern that led me to go back to the same days, but five years back…
This time last year, I was solo tripping around Luxembourg, my first stop before proceeding to France and Germany*. And today, I’m currently in Germany.
...and about three years ago, I made a major life change… which, of course, involved travelling as well.
Kinda makes me think I should officially declare September, particularly the week of the 10th to the 17th, my travelling days. Haha.
I'm also trying to remember, via pictures, the emotions I felt on those days, especially last year, because a lot has changed since then. How did I feel back then? I remember reminiscing last year after a long day of hiking, just as I am doing now, except there’s no hike today.
And how do I feel today, the 13th of September, 2026?
I suppose it's too early in the day to say anything definite, but I can only hope it turns out to be a great one.

After having dinner with Nora (image above), I got off the bus, still riding the sugar rush from the ice cream we grabbed on the way to the station, and thought I might as well check out one of the brown bars in my neighborhood...
And, what an adventure.
I walked in and was handed a beer and snacks on the house. Then I befriended a couple, played darts with them, and unboxed my newly redeemed shot roulette from my arcade points. Naturally, they decided their evening mission was to try to set me up with their friend. Lmao. I have never seen anyone work so hard to match me up.
One of the lessons from tonight is that sometimes you can just... do stuff. This was also reinforced by the wife telling me she was so proud to see me there by myself, which made me go, "I solo travel by myself. What exactly is a bar that I cannot go to by myself?"
But mostly, I think the takeaway from the night is the importance of physical attraction. I think one of the most insane and hottest things in the world is watching people who are physically and undeniably attracted to each other.
I think it's one of the most beautiful things to witness, and I think people should probably never date or enter a relationship with someone they don't occasionally look at and think, I want to tear your clothes off.
They could be casually explaining the Riemann hypothesis or deriving the Navier–Stokes equations, and meanwhile your brain is just going, yes yes, very fascinating... but I am having wildly inappropriate thoughts about you right now.
I mean, of course you want the intellectual connection and the friendship and the good conversations and all that. But also... do I want to absolutely lose my manners with you? You know that feral, almost criminal level of attraction you can feel for someone? That. Otherwise, what am I doing?
I'll also never understand people who discount the value of physical attraction. Lol. Of course, take my take with a grain of salt. After all, I'm single. 😂 But if you're in a relationship and that feeling has completely disappeared, or you never had it in the first place, maybe that's worth thinking about.
Anyways, besides them trying to set me up with their friend, which was not particularly comfortable, I didn't mind being their fourth wheel tonight. I was mostly just sitting there amused by the chemistry between these two people who had no eyes for anyone but each other, despite having been together for almost 13 years.
The way they still looked at each other? Absolute freaking hot stuff.
At some point, when the wife was at the bar, the man stared at her and said, more to himself than to me or their friend, "Isn't she the most beautiful person you've ever seen?"
Btw, he was sober, so...
Anyway, I'm home now, writing about them and rooting for them...

When I wrote "Talk about it anyway" a while back, I mentioned that I was writing by my floor lamp because I hadn't connected my ceiling lights. Well, I now have an ex-colleague/acquaintance coming over to help me with it because I dared to talk about fixing my lights. I asked for help because I couldn't imagine shelling out €450 to fix a light. I might rather get electrocuted than pay that.
Anyway, it made me go back to this piece and ask you once again: what are you talking about? What are you telling people about yourself, your interests, your struggles, whatever? If you don't talk, or ask, or share, no one will know where to come in.
So, once again, I beseech you to talk. Talk till you cannot.
...and as we say in Yoruba, Sọ̀rọ̀ sókè.

This was one of the last lines in The Undomestic Goddess by Sophie Kinsella, and I thought I'd share it because of how much it resonates with me.
One of the ways I try to live, and something I often tell people, is that you can really be anyone, do anything, become anything. That's the whole essence of life. It's such a shame, and such a waste, not to exercise that freedom, especially when the only thing holding you back is yourself.
You can describe yourself without defining yourself. You can know who you are without boxing yourself in.
And again, shoutout to Sophie Kinsella for inspiring girls to read, dream, and live. She is thoroughly missed.

Sometime in April, I wrote this entry
It’s been a few months, and I’d like to reiterate that the only reason I haven’t completely dismissed the whole “click” and “spark” rhetoric of modern dating is that I keep meeting women with whom there’s an undeniable click. I don’t know why. Maybe because there are no expectations.
Today I met another woman, and it was fireworks. Like, firefreakingworks.
When she was leaving, we shook hands like four different times. At one point, I was like, “Would you like a hug?” We said goodbye in different languages, then started analyzing the languages and their meanings, then almost slipped into another high-five, another hug, another refusal to let the moment end.
It reminded me of a date I went on “back in the days.” Except I wouldn’t call it romantic sparks, just primal *** sparks.
You know, whoever was looking at the CCTV under the streetlight at the square we stood would’ve had the same experience as the security folks watching Callum Turner and Laura Haddock in the first scene of The Capture.
If the film hadn’t been shot before the date, I would’ve thought they got the inspiration from us. It was that intense! Except without the ending when the CCTV got manipulated.
Anyways, cheers to meeting ladies who blow my mind from the first hi!

A lot of the most memorable things that have happened to me recently have come from doing things I didn't want to do.
Meeting Racheal.
Meeting Mariam.
Signing up for things outside my comfort zone.
Meeting all the amazing people I met today.
Would you believe I basically motivated myself to go out today by saying, "You have to do things you don't feel like doing to get the things you want," then splashed cold water on my face?
Then I spent minutes convincing myself there was a point to going out, and even when I finally decided to step out, I was still dilly-dallying after getting dressed.
But look at the benefits. Uh, Olu, look at the benefits.
Funny how the things we resist sometimes end up being the things we're most grateful for.

As I told one of my colleagues after I published Talk About It Anyway based on our last interactions: don’t speak to me if you don’t want me writing about you.
Well, I have another piece born out of conversations with two people, a friendquaintance and a proper acquaintance. My disappointment when I found out I did not, in fact, invent the word friendquaintance was real.

You know how they say, "the good ones are already taken"? Apparently, that applies just as much to choosing a GP as it does to finding a partner.
I finally found a spotless 5.0-rated GP, only to discover that their website says they're at capacity and not accepting new patients.
Noooooooooo! I want to enroll in your practice. Open it just for me.
Doctor, please!😭

Had my second book club meetup today. We discussed a lot, but what I found most amusing was the waiter serving our drinks suddenly saying, “I just finished this book!” when they spotted one of the books on the table.
What followed was an interesting conversation about the book, which ended with me ordering A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara on the way home because the waiter said it was one of their favorite books.
Of course, everyone else immediately went, “Oh no, it’s all about suffering,” but the waiter just replied, “I’m too happy in the real world.”
I loved their enthusiasm for the book, so now I really can’t wait to read it. Fingers crossed that I can handle it...

I intended to sleep the second I got home, but after eating the Turkish pizza I got on my way home (which was fire, honestly), I got quite an unexpected burst of energy and sat down to write something that has been gnawing at me: “Men-Centered Women: How Much Is Too Much to Tolerate?”

Going for a nightcap at my friend’s place. Left mine at 23:30 and she’s less than 20 minutes away by tram. I’m on the tram now, and we’re talking about how much proximity actually matters in relationships.
As someone who’s basically always done Long Distance Relationships (LDRs) because I “desire distance to be in love” (JK, but what do I do when I just keep meeting people who live halfway across the country…or the world), having friends nearby and being able to just pop in and out has made me realise that LDR is actually suffering and should be avoided at all cost.🤧
Imagine wanting a spontaneous nightcap in the middle of the night, but the train, tram, or bus isn’t running…or worse, you need a visa.
After a decade of one LDR or another, I now, very seriously recommend dating people who live less than an hour away. I mean, among other things, how else are you going to randomly decide at 11:30pm to go for a “quick **** call” (sorry, I mean nightcap🥱)?

There have been countless research papers and blog posts about what mobile phones are doing to us. About how they pull us away from our surroundings and chip at our ability to notice people, have "small talks" and form casual human connections, because everywhere (cafe, bathroom, dates, dinner) we’re on our phones, heads down and barely looking up. So I won’t bore you by rehashing all of that.
But even knowing this, seeing it, doing it myself, I still find myself surprised by just how prevalent and deeply insane this is now rooted in us.
Case in point: today. I was standing on the platform waiting for my train when a woman came running up the stairs, clearly trying to catch the one on the opposite side. She was just a bit too late and the doors had already closed. But the conductor, standing by another door, saw her and started waving her over, trying to get her attention.
But guess what? Her face was buried in her phone.
I even tried the Nigerian way of calling someone—blowing air sharply between my lips—and when she eventually looked up, her ears were plugged with earpods, so she couldn’t hear either.
At that point, the conductor just looked at me, gave a wave and closed the door.
And it makes you wonder just how disconnected we have become from the very world these devices are supposed to connect us to? We have everything at our fingertips, the entire world within reach, and yet the things closest to us slip by unseen, unnoticed.
Anyway, I’m writing this now on the train buried in my own phone (my seat neighbour is buried in hers as well), So I guess I’ll hit publish… and then actually look around for a bit.

My mention of "click" in the previous entry amuses me, mostly because people in the dating scene love to say, “if there’s no click, I’m not interested.”
I’ve always thought that was BS, I still mostly do, but after yesterday hanging out with the girl i met by chance and having the time of my life within minutes, I’m at least open to being proven wrong.
I'm thinking if you can get that in friendship, perhaps you should be able to get that on romantic dates?
Before we go too far, I wanna say I don't think you're meant to feel "sparks" because you probably want to see a doctor if that happens. However, I think you're meant to feel a version of "you’ve known each other forever and you merely lost touch and now you’re just picking up from where you left off."
Or maybe that’s not it at all. But I think you’re meant to feel good. At least we can agree in that 😅

Something I’ve been waiting on finally came through yesterday, so after an improv show I figured I’d celebrate the win with drinks alongside a bunch of “expats,” as we're called.
I’m mid-conversation with a group, already half-thinking I’d rather be drinking alone, when a lady taps me on the shoulder:
“Are you Olu?”
“Yeah,” I say, slightly suspicious, but not exactly worried. I mean… what’s she gonna do?
She goes, “I’m so glad you’re here. I came specifically for you.”
Anyway, here’s the condensed version of what’s happened in the less than 24 hours since:
We went from a quiet corner conversation → to joining the group → back to the corner → to leaving together because we “clicked” and we just needed more space to know each other→ to wandering aimlessly through The Hague → to dancing across multiple spots → to her crashing at mine → to me now sitting at hers, eating her signature pancakes… which, by the way, are incredible.
This is the kind of story that you watch on TV as a love story or in books, in fact I read similar in a book recently. Except in this case, it's a friendship and the beginning of a ridiculously good and unexpected friendship.
Argh! What a couple of interesting hours it has been! I cannot wait to see what happens next.
Also, my last two Fridays have been this interesting. What's gonna happen next week Friday? Let's wait and see🙈

I was working on an “engineering” project at work and, at some point, I figured I should talk to the team that originally inspired the idea.
So I went looking for them and ended up speaking to one of their engineers. Mid-conversation, they asked, “Why are you trying to use that tool? Is there a specific reason? Cos you could use this other one...”
It was a full-on eureka moment. Like, my goodness, why did I not think about it!
It’s been a while since I’ve gotten my hands dirty with code for anything serious (not just as a hobby), and after that conversation, I felt like I was back in a proper engineering team again. It reminded me of the core principle of not being fixated on the tool, but the actual problem you are trying to solve.
Funny enough, that’s exactly what my two Computer Science degrees were supposed to drill into me, and I almost forgot it. I’ve gone back to basics now, and the project is already shaping up much better.
Anyway, it also reminded me of the piece I wrote about talking. It’s good to talk. You never know where the solution to your next blockage will come from. I would never have gained the insight I had today about the project's direction if I had not had that conversation. So, talk to people. Exchange ideas. You'll be better for it.

Well, wrote a short thing about it. So go read: In the beginning, there was no beginning.

Today, Google Photos reminded me of this day three years ago with a picture I took with a coursemate. I remember that time clearly, just like now, I was going through some of the craziest moments of my life while writing my PGD exams, and I still made it through with straight A's.
If you asked me what I’m most proud of about myself, I think it will be that I always show up. I show up for myself, no matter what. And I guess that makes sense, because if I don’t, who will?
Anyways, cheers to once again showing up for myself as I navigate the colorful moments of these past few months… moments I can’t wait to look back on as history.

A bro just tried some silly "amusing" nonsense near me, and all I could think was that they truly have no idea who I am (not surprising) and what I’ve experienced. So, I’ve decided to immortalise this here for them and others.
My expectations of romance were shaped by the incredible friendships I’ve had with women. They showed me what it means to be loved, seen, and genuinely cared for, and because of that, I can’t accept anything less than what I’ve already experienced with them. They showed me the way and the truth, and now I cannot allow myself to be smeared with mediocrity.
Up women, any day, anytime!!!

Watching Love Is Blind and seeing everyone relive their trauma every time they meet someone new in the pods is making me want to pass out. I physically cringed when someone asked another person what their “passion” is.
I can’t believe this is also the phase of life I’m currently subjected to. At this point, I should probably just make a dossier to hand out, because I really do not think I can do this. God help me because I just cannot.

It's 19:35 as I write this, sitting in Vondelpark, eating a bag of Nigerian plantain chips I picked up at an African store a few minutes ago.
I’m people-watching, and I’ve lost count of the runners. Why is everyone running? Where are they running to? What are they running from? Should I start running too?
Even the cyclists look like they’re rushing somewhere. Or maybe that’s just how it feels from this bench. Meanwhile, I’m here, loudly crunching plantain chips between my teeth. I can see the glances, are they judging me?
You know what, whatever. We all gotta do what we gotta do; they run, I sit, eat, and walk. But what a beautiful, beautiful sight! What a pleasure to see, to breathe in the air, to be here, to have ears, and to be able to listen to this masterpiece (https://youtu.be/qxsLNDR9q5Y?si=Igne1vgaonXpAEP9), which I think is JERUB's best. Absolute beauty.
Should probably wander to the park more often.

Every few weeks, I meet someone who’s completely naive about life in Nigeria and surprised by how well Nigerians seem to “fit” in developed countries. Somehow, the conversation almost always drifts to the effects of colonization, westernization, and all the other “-zations.”
And then, sometimes, someone asks me to say something in my language. I remember the last time that happened. When I was done, they said, “You seem really excited about it. It’s lovely, isn’t it? I wish I cared about my language like that.”
Of course, being so proud of my language, I launched into a long rant about Yoruba and the culture around it. At some point, I even caught myself making slightly pompous comparisons to French.
The nerve of me.

Working on our documentation site at work, and was surprised to see we’re using Bootstrap5. I could’ve sworn Bootstrap was long-deprecated.
It was the first CSS library I ever learned, and it felt kinda nostalgic to be working with it again. Anyway, it was kind of exciting to realize that even though I haven’t used it in years, I could still get things done with it. Still got the juice, any day, any time.

There’s nothing more exciting than seeing tech really "teching."
I was using Mac Notes to calculate some stuff, and every time I added the equals sign, it gave me the result. Like wowww!
That is so freakin’ intelligent. I mean, sure, maybe there are security or privacy whatever considerations… but still. Isn’t it just beautiful?

Software engineers say, “naming variables is the hardest thing you’ll ever do.” I’m sorry, but naming anything is just unreasonably hard. I’ve been brainstorming names for something I want to work on, and consulting Claude has not helped either. Anyhoo, if it’s any consolation, AI will not make baby name consultants redundant.

Once again, insomnia has me up tonight, probably not helped by the constant need to check my devices for all the apartment alerts I’ve set up. On the bright side, I just came up with a really nice idea for a side project, and I’m quite excited about it.

Every time people ask me what my motivation is to learn Dutch, I’ve always said I think it’s a necessary safety measure since I bike around the city. Well, after starting and stopping a bunch of times, I think I’ve finally found the motivation to pick it up again.
Yesterday, about ten minutes after the expected departure time of the train I was on, the conductor said something over the speaker. I didn’t understand a single word. The person sitting opposite me asked if I understood, and I said "no." So we both turned to the other person in the compartment, and they also said "no." We looked around furtively and asked another person, and they echoed "no."
By this time, we could see people complaining as they left the train, so we figured something was wrong and that the train wasn’t leaving. The reason for the delay, though, we had no idea. It was frustrating and honestly kind of scary that none of us understood anything. In a life-or-death situation, we still wouldn’t have known what was going on. So… back to studying Dutch for me. No more excuses.

On my way back from work today, I saw a train leaving in about a minute that I could’ve caught, but since it was packed to the brim and I would’ve had to stand for around 40 minutes, I decided to wait for the next one.
Tell me why the train I got on ended up being delayed for another ten minutes, and I eventually had to switch to a different train anyway. And yes, I still had to stand for 40 minutes, because it had to accommodate both its own passengers and the passengers from my train.
I was so mad at myself for not just getting on the first train. I could’ve stood and gotten home earlier, but instead I waited, still stood for 40 minutes, and got home late.
Won't be able to get my time back, but glad I can at least request for a refund!

I try not to use the word "hate" but I really really do hate websites where the mouse has been changed to some fancy stuff.

Bruh, visiting people at their homes in winter is a game of chess because you don't know their house heating rules. So you have to carry extra socks and jumpers just in case.
